The Laramie Project (2002)
Jeremy Davies: Jedadiah Schultz
This movie centers around
the true story of killing of Matthew Shepard. Shepard was young
homosexual man who was beaten to death by 2 teenagers in Laramie,
Wyoming in 1998. The incident gained national notoriety and brought the
small town of Laramie into the public eye. A NYC theater group traveled
to Laramie to interview the residents and find out how Shepard's death
and the ensuing national public outcry had affected their town. This
movie is based on the actual transcripts of the interviews. Jeremy
Davies plays Jedadiah Shulz, a young theatre student at the University
of Wyoming. Schultz, who is straight, had no experience with
homosexuality except for a role in a theatre production of 'Angels in
America', a role he accepted only because he wanted to win a theatre
competition. As the movie progresses, you see the personal growth that
Schultz goes through as he comes to witness and understand the
devastating effects of hate crimes, and he comes to a point where a
role in 'Angels in America' is more than just a way to win a
competition.
